The Pain Truth has launched a new educational program to communicate to young adults in Florida the seriousness of prescription drug abuse. This is a very unique program, created by physicians, law enforcement and epidemiologists in Florida, to creatively and scientifically explain the details of how drugs affect the body, the brain and the lives of those who decide to use them.

"... the presentation was absolutely outstanding. The best I've ever seen in over 30 years in education." - Barbara Gentry, Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition

The Office of National Drug Control Policy reports that more than 47 percent of teens get prescription drugs from their friends for free. About 10 percent buy them from their friends, and another 10 percent take them from friends or family without asking.  Many young people are also becoming addicted after an accident or injury that lead them to prescribed pain pills.

Prescription drug abuse is an epidemic in the State of Florida.  Still, many people don't know how potentially addicting and dangerous prescription opiates can be.  And most young adults have no idea how dangerous and deadly prescription drugs can be.

Check out the facts, and then call or write to the Pain Truth about having the WAKE UP program presented in your high school or college.

-  A study of seven states, including Florida, reports more teenagers use opioids recreationally than use marijuana. And of the states studied by the CDC, Florida had the highest number of overdose deaths.

 - Every day in the United States, an average of 2,000 teenagers use prescription drugs without a doctor's guidance for the first time.

- Taking just one large dose of an opioid (such as OxyContin or Percocet) could cause severe breathing complications or death.

- If combined with any medication or substance that causes drowsiness, CNS depressants (such as Valium or Xanax) can slow both the heart and respiration, which can lead to death.
